Moses Luster has returned, bringing with him a heavy-duty new album. The sophomore effort opens with the driving "Hollywood's Black Heart", its vintage analog synths, pigpen drums and wayward banjo set the agenda clear: The stranger has returned, and he has more tales of the weary to tell.
Moses (a severely lapsed member of the Universalist Church) then turns his attention to his tenuous religious past with "God Is Watching". It's a theme that reoccurs throughout the record, "The God Machine" tells the true tale of John Murray Spear and his mechanical messiah, "There's A Cross For Everyone" speaks of redemption and "Mary Winkler" has the titular character murder her preacher husband and arrive at an epiphany in jail. Amidst these tracks Moses once again finds his stride continuing the fight for life, love and his struggle with a dark past.
It's always good to have Moses Luster back and remind us that we are not alone in our search of some kind of meaning in the madness.
