"Somewhere in Milan lives a man, who likes The Beatles. Big fucking surprise. He has also taken a shine to The Velvet Underground, Portishead, The Pixies and Tom Waits. You may, in fact, have heard of more exciting stuff. However, there are reasons for the popularity of the acts mentioned above. For one, a generally recognised high quality of their creations. Now, when a young musician like Nicolas Falcon draws inspiration from these people, it is cocksurely not exactly exotic news; it is however a fertile soil for a widespread, easy accessibility to Nicolas’ music.

Based on these monuments of modern popular music, Nicolas has, to some degree, made his own way. The son of Cuban refugees, he was born in Houston, Texas, raised in Miami and lived in Philadelphia for three years before finally taking up residence in Italy. On such a path, it goes without saying that culturally and musically a little more gets thrown in the mix than the aforementioned classics of the western world. In fact, Nicolas is also enthused about Chanson, Balkan Folk and playful music with a Mediterranean or Latin touch. For example, Antonio Carlos Jobim or Cuban greats such as Ibrahim Ferrer and Compay Segundo.

But what develops when you connect the dots? It is simple music that varies between craggy guitar parts and buttery soft moments of warmth. Lyrically, it is partly satirical, partly crude, partly funny, more often light-hearted, but almost always witty. Sometimes one has to think of Jonathan Richman, who gained fame and honor with a similarly influenced fusion. Like Richman, Nicolas relies on his guitar most of the time: When other instruments are interweaved into the music, it is carefully avoided to create a Wall of Sound. Each song is a delicate miniature and should be treated as such.

Fittingly, Nicolas’ expectations of his work seem pretty reserved and unpretentious: “My motivation is an innate urge to create something that I can be proud of and that others appreciate on a not-so-superficial level”, he says, and there he stands, the artist, who has to create what needs to be created, who has to tell, what needs to be told.

Aaahh-records is proud and thrilled to release Nicolas Falcon’s self-titled debut album. As usual you can download the whole album for free on aaahh-records.net. Only this time everyone who donates some money for the download, will be given access to Nicolas’ fabulous, yet mysterious Secret Album. While this rare, cloaked album will be solely available digitally, we will send a fancy CD version of the self-titled debut to everyone who donates ten Euros or more." (aaahh records)
